Ghawazi Caravan is an innovative Tribal Bellydance company founded in 2000 by one of Australia's premier Tribal dancers and choreographers, Devi Mamak. Devi and the award winning Ghawazi Caravan are highly sought after locally and all over the country, N.Z, Asia and the U.S.A for workshops and performances.


Their style is a mix of Middle Eastern Dance fused together with stylistic influences from East India, North Africa, Flamenco dance and contemporary dance, presenting together as one, using exciting props and compelling formations and choreographies. This gives them an exciting and theatrical flair that is not only new to Australia but also to the world of Middle Eastern dance and music.

Ghawazi Caravan's style of dance has led the way in Australia in bridging the gap between the music and dance of the Middle East and that of the western world.

Their fusion of multicultural dance styles is greatly inspired by the traditional styles of the East and presents the dance in an excitingly theatrical manner with music, costume and artistic skill.

The music that Ghawazi Caravan chooses to dance to is a myriad of different cultures which mirrors our cultural diversity here in Australia. Pieces chosen often use Darabuka, Zills, Didgeridoo, Flute (both ney and the shukuhachi of Japan), Sitar, Djembi, violin, flamenco guitar, electric guitar, electronica music, rababa, oud and more. The costuming and stage presentation of Ghawazi Caravan displays a cultural mix of Middle Eastern design hip belts and pantaloons, Rajastani skirts and cholis, traditional Afghani jewellery and coins, elaborate head dresses, and beautiful exotic stage makeup.

Many of the dancers in Ghawazi Caravan have been dancing for well over a decade with most having travelled to the U.S.A to learn from the masters of Tribal and Oriental belly dance including the creator of American Tribal Style (ATS), Carolena Nericcio, artistic director of Fat Chance belly Dance (FCBD). Devi Mamak, artistic director of Ghawazi Caravan, has completed Carolena Nericcio's intensive Teacher Training course, which has lead to Ghawazi Caravan being the only troupe in the southern hemisphere recognised as a sister school to Fat Chance Belly dance.

While ATS is Ghawazi Caravan's main focus they have also studied a variety of dance styles from the various traditional Middle Eastern styles as well as other cultural dance styles such as Classical Indian and Flamenco, classical ballet, jazz and contemporary dance styles. Collectively, all of the Ghawazi Caravan dancers have a vast knowledge in dance and movement, which they bring into the troupe to enhance and enrich this diverse multicultural style.
